Survivor Comments

So this is it, how it all gets started and our parents put us away, without trial or jury, without a guilty verdict. Just a simple application. How easy it seems to be able to subject your child to a place so horrifying.  While the application is straightforward, I would simply like to take an opportunity to make a few observations.

1.       In item # 11, we see that Mountain Park asks for the church affiliation of the family. We know from this that MP is aware of the family’s belief structure from the beginning. They are aware of how many students they have of Baptist and non-Baptist faith coming into the game. And yet, at what time is the student ever given opportunity to practice the religion of their family if they are not of the same faith as MP?

2.       In Item #12, MP asks for the names and ages of siblings. Knowing the names of the siblings is understandable, in case an emergency arises and the parents cannot be contacted- or is it, since they must list 4 emergency contacts below? But why does the school ask for the ages of the siblings? Thinking back to my days as a student, there were quite a number of students who had siblings come in after they had been there for a period of time. Easy marketing strategy?

3.       In item #13, MP asks what academic grade the applicant is prepared for. What is the point of this question if MP’s educational system is set to put each student on their own performance level, which is determined by diagnostic testing? Most of the students in MP are not on the academic level of their chronological grade, so this question holds little relevance to the student’s academic placement.

4.       This is the most important point I’d like to make regarding this application- In items #14 and #15, The parents are asked about the child’s behavior. They are instructed to submit a brief synopsis of their behavior patterns which has brought them to seek MP. At what point does the child in question get to speak on his or her own behalf? When a child has not been communicating with the parent, and the parent simply makes assumptions on the child’s behalf, when is the child allowed to defend him- or herself? In the case of an abusive family situation, when the child has not had behavioral problems, but is simply being confined to protect the family from scrutiny, who speaks out for the child to ensure that justice is done? And why does Mountain Park ask a question when they do not acknowledge the behavior of the child in any way during their enrollment? Counseling is not given to help children learn from their mistakes, or to help understand the problems they have faced. All students are put into the same category- GUILTY. The crime is irrelevant; teenagers are treated as a problem to be corrected. Parents are given the opportunity to speak for their child’s behavior, regardless of their view on the situation, and are encouraged to find fault with their teen. The teen is simply forced to suffer in silence at the hands of people who know nothing about them other than the vital statistics.

5.       Item #16, hobbies, sports, musical instruments, and other activities are not continued at Mountain Park unless your sport is public ridicule or military style physical training, your hobbies include crocheting and needlepoint for girls and slave labor for boys, or your favorite activities include sitting  in silence in hopes that you won’t be pointed out as an example today. Another pointless question.

6.       Agreements: Here we see the veiled threat I’ve mentioned so many times. Parents are often rushed through the orientation and enrollment process so quickly that many questions are left unanswered until it is too late to get a full view of what they are getting into. If a parent learns more about the way Mountain Park treats the children and changes their position and support of the school’s policies, they are left with the balance of their child’s tuition held over their head. The annual tuition is $14,400. This is a lot of money to most parents, especially when the child is pulled out of a program early.  Many parents look at the threat of having their entire financial balance come due and simply force their child to finish out the year regardless of the school’s treatment or policies.
